Good afternoon NFSD Neighborhood,
\r\nOn Thursday, June 11th, State Superintendent Reykdal announced that he expects schools across the state of Washington to reopen in the fall for in-person instruction and released the Reopening Washington Schools 2020 District Planning Guide. His stated expectation lines up with the hopes of the vast majority of our community, to have our children back in school, receiving face to face instruction from their teachers. During his press release, he specifically stated that “Most districts should plan on going back to school for “traditional” schooling”, with required preventative safety measures including health screening of students and staff, enhanced cleaning and hygiene, wearing masks, and social distancing when feasible.
\r\nThe NFSD has been gathering information, feedback, and the needs of our students, staff, and parents over the last several weeks. In addition to conducting a reopening survey and administrative meetings, we held the first of several Zoom meetings with a stakeholder group of over fifty administrators, parents, teachers, and classified staff members. We used these methods to gather “lessons learned” from the actions we took this spring during the closure, so that we can make adjustments and improve on those actions for the future, especially if we are forced to pivot back to a distance learning format again in the coming school year. Most importantly, we wanted to ask the different members of our community what their needs and preferences are as we plan for the fall of 2020.
\r\nAs we began this planning process, we determined our number one priority moving forward will be the needs of the students, staff, and parents of the North Franklin School District and, of course, education. This team is going to take the guidance provided by the state and do everything we legally can as an organization to make it fit our community and the needs of our students, staff and parents. Our goal will be to move as close to a normal, traditional school year as possible given the constraints placed on us by the state and keep our students and staff safe at the same time. The reopening team will be meeting several times between now and the end of June to determine what is required, what is recommended, what is feasible, and how that all fits within the needs of our community. We are hoping to have the main components of our plan ready to communicate to the community by the end of the month. The rest of the summer we will iron out the smaller details, make adjustments as the situation changes and as we receive more guidance from the state and communicate with our community.
\r\nThere are many questions left to be answered about things like athletics, extra curricular activities, individuals with unique needs, and many others, however, the North Franklin School District is just the right size, with just the right people to make necessary adjustments, account for individual circumstances, and communicate with each other clearly in order to meet everyone’s needs. As we move forward, please do not hesitate to reach out to discuss the needs of your student or your family, ask questions as they arise, or provide us more feedback and input.
