Reopening School Update
\r\nNorth Franklin School District administrators and their building level leadership teams are continuing to review how schools will reopen in the fall of 2020 for in-person instruction to meet the needs of our students, parents, and staff. We are committed to creating a plan where students are physically in their schools as much as possible so they may connect with their teachers and continue to build relationships and have social interactions with their peers. We are also making future plans for situations where the state or local health department might cause us to limit how often and how many students are in schools at any one time.
\r\nOver the last several weeks we have held a series of reopening meetings with administration, teachers, classified employees, and parents and we have conducted multiple surveys and gathered much feedback regarding the distance learning we conducted during the last three months of this school year and what the needs of our students, parents, and staff are for the coming school year. Additionally, we thoroughly reviewed the state’s reopening requirements in light of the needs we identified from our students, parents, and staff and have started to narrow down our plans for the coming year.
\r\nRecognizing that there is no “one size fits all” solution based on the needs of our different age students, the different size and layout of our school buildings, and the different resources we have across the district, we have determined that we will need to have a “hybrid” plan where the youngest students with the greatest needs will attend in-person every day and the oldest students with the least need will have a combination of in-person attendance for part of the time, and distance learning for part of the time. This means you can expect your elementary aged student to be in school full time and your 7th through 12th grade student to be in school approximately half time and working from home on their chromebooks half time.
\r\nThere are four major requirements for reopening our schools for in-person instruction including (1) entry screening of all students and staff to determine if they have a fever or any symptoms of the virus, (2) social distancing between individuals of at least six feet throughout the day, (3) extra hand washing, hygiene and sanitization of facilities, equipment and supplies, and (4) cloth face coverings or clear plastic face shields worn by all throughout the day. Through our district surveys and through conversations with community members, numerous parents have expressed their desire to keep their students home and seek a homeschool or distance learning alternative rather than participate in school following these requirements. Even though we are confident that our administration, staff and parents can work together to implement these requirements in a traditional NFSD kind, caring, compassionate, and kid friendly way, we also recognize that we need to plan for an alternative.
\r\nThe NFSD has a well established homeschool/distance learning program that has been in operation for nearly a decade. The “NFSD Virtual Academy” currently serves students from Kindergarten through Grade 5, and in light of the feedback we have received from parents, we are planning to expand the Virtual Academy up to 12th grade and offer enrollment in the Academy as a way to meet some parents’ and students’ needs, as well as maintain their enrollment in the North Franklin School District. The uncertainty, constant change, many requirements and huge obstacles make this a uniquely difficult situation to plan and create solutions for. However, knowing that our goal is to do whatever we can to meet the needs of our students, parents, and staff AND provide a quality education for our children makes it all worth it.
