How Does My Child Get Services?

First, we need a referral. Talk to your child's teacher or principal to begin the process. Call the Special Education office at 234-9218 if your child is birth to 5 years of age.

Determining what your child needs is a complex task. Your involvement and the information you provide is necessary to the process.

Following the referral, you will meet with the team to determine what additional information and testing is necessary. When you give permission and each team member has their assignment, the evaluation will begin.

When all the information is gathered a decision will be made regarding your child's eligibility for special education.

You and the team will develop an IEP for your child. The program may be a cooperative effort of both special education and general education designed to meet the unique needs of the student.

Safeguards

You will be provided a copy of Procedural Safeguards. This document will be explained and offered several times through the evaluation and team meeting discussions.

This document includes safeguards for your child which will be in place when the student is referred and remain in effect as long as the student is eligible for and receives special education services.

The safeguards outline parent and student rights to know and be a part of the evaluation and placement in program.

The document also lists district requirements to provide proper notice, receive consent, deal with complaints and provide access to records.
